Meet…David Mathieson, Director at BTG Advisory
Trust and integrity have been at the forefront of David Mathieson’s long and respected career in banking and finance, and these values are a key reason why he chooses to work with Mason Thomas Law today.
After leaving banking in 2022, David became a Director at BTG Advisory in Sheffield which is part of the Begbies Traynor Group. In his role he supports clients with their funding needs; one of his areas of specialism being property funding for owner-occupiers and investors.
His journey with Mason Thomas Law however goes back to before the business was established. David first met Cathy Thomas in the early days of her legal career. When she established Mason Thomas Law, it was David she called for assistance.
David recalls: “I was the Area Manager for Barclays UK when I got the call from Cathy in 2019 saying that she needed to open a business bank account. I was delighted to support her.”
Their professional paths didn’t cross again until 2023 when David joined Begbies Traynor Group as an advisor. A referral from CMP Legal to Mason Thomas Law for a client requiring a property portfolio restructure reignited their collaboration. Since then, David has referred numerous clients to Mason Thomas Law, including Tom Lawson from The Psalter.
David and Cathy share the same business values, fostering a symbiotic relationship where they regularly recommend each other’s services to their clients. “Our values align when it comes to doing things the right way,” says David.

This is crucial for my clients, who are owner-managers requiring individualised support.”
